This 13-meter Melaka Sultanate Watermill structure cost about RM1.5 million and was built based on the Islamic technology that can be found in both Syria as well as Lijiang, China.
“Intrudu“ or “introduction” or “coming before” in the local Kristang language is celebrated on the Sunday preceding Ash Wednesday, which falls on Feb 22. The centuries-old celebration is unique to the Portuguese-Eurasian community here as it is the only Catholic village that performs the fun-filled water rite prior to the start of the Catholic fasting period of Lent. Lent is a season of fasting and penance leading to Easter Sunday on April 8. The water festival traces it roots to the arrival of the Portuguese to local shores in 1511. The water-dousing symbolises purification before the start of fasting and penance. It was a wet day at the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir here as hundreds of residents and visitors took part in the traditional water splashing festival.

Getting around Malacca by car is one of the best way to move around from places to places. However, streets in the world heritage sites of Malacca are very narrow, especially the Dutch Square and Jonker Street areas. These areas are built during the Dutch occupation and roads are not built to accommodate that many vehicles at that point of time. During the weekends, public holidays and school holidays, traffic built up easily.

As the saying goes – early bird catches the worm. So your best way to escape the jam is to get into Malacca town early, probably around eight or nine in the morning. And travelling early also let you get strategic parking spots easily. You can park your car right in the heart of the world heritage city.

When you do park in the city, please be reminded that the parking spaces are not free. The state government maintains a parking coupon system for the boxed parking spaces. The parking coupons are mainly sold in half an hour and hourly rate. It will cost you RM 0.40 for half an hour while the one hour will cost you RM 0.60. Normally, the parking coupon agents are fairly easy to locate and you can buy the booklet containing ten coupons costing RM 4.00 for half-an hour and RM6.00 for an hour.

Alternatively, you can also opt to buy a daily parking coupon which will cost you RM 5.00 per piece if you are planning to park at the public parking lot for more than eight hours. All the parking coupon also enable you to park at any area in town – only the district under the Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB) and Perbadanan Hang Tuah Jaya (PHTJ).

My advice – always pay a little bit more to avoid being slapped with parking summons. The municipal officers are very efficient in giving out summons.

Lastly, you can also get a per-entry parking for less than RM5.00.

Melaka is aiming to be a smoke-free state by 2013. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has entered into a three-way agreement with Malacca Health Department and a group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), who called themselves Malacca Federation of Smoke-free NGOs, to conduct research on the implementation of five areas in Malacca as smoke-free zones. The five smoke-free areas are the 4.2 km square World Heritage City, Taman Melaka Raya, the Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh as well as the Alor Gajah and Jasin town centres. The research will focus on assessing the efficiency of the implementation of smoke-free zones in Malacca. Malacca had been chosen for the implementation due to the strong support from the Malacca State Government. Anyone caught smoking in any of the smoke-free zones is liable to be fined RM300. The maximum penalty is RM5,000. Click here to read more about a smoke-free state on The Star Online.
