I would suggest you to take on the Panorama bus (it's a red bus) as it stops at most of the interesting places in the city. If you decide to travel by taxi, it should range from RM5 to RM10 for a short journey - Melaka Sentral is located quite near to the city centre. However, if you travel during peak hours or when the city is flooded with cars (usually on weekends and public holidays), then the taxi fare might doubled. The longer journey (5-6 hours) is because some of them have to go through Kuala Lumpur and later use the Karak highway to exit Kuantan.
