Malacca wants its annual month-long Chinese New Year carnival to be listed as an intangible national heritage. Currently, there is no local Chinese culture from Malacca that had been gazetted as a national heritage. A special work committee will be formed to apply for the gazettement.

In this year of the Dragon, Melaka is decorated with more than 200,000 lanterns, 50,000 streamers, 20 decorated arches and two giant dragons – known as the 1Malaysia dragons throughout the state. The public is also entertained by a series of cultural activities and performances during the carnival. This carnival is the most happening Chinese New Year carnival in Malacca, and cannot be seen in other states of Malaysia.
