Reputed to be the first and only Submarine Museum (Muzium Kapal Selam) in Malaysia, it is opened to the public on 22 November 2011 for 10 days. Thereafter, the Submarine Museum had been closed for refurbishment work and recently reopened on 17 December 2011. One of the main attraction of the Submarine Museum is that it will house the decommissioned Agosta 70 class submarine named SMD Ouessant.
The Submarine Museum project cost the State Government RM12.6 million and will be the 25th museums under the management of Perbadanan Muzium Melaka (PERZIM). The submarine was transported from Brest, France and successfully arrive in Melaka on 13 November 2011.
Built in 1979, the French made submarine measured 67.57 meter in length, 11.75 meter in heigh and 6.5 meter in width. SMD Ouessant was previously used for training submarine crew in Malaysia from 2005 to 2009 following the acquisition of two submarines by the Ministry of Defense of Malaysia.
Before the decommission of SMD Ouessant, the submarine was widely regarded as a silent weapon. It is capable of carrying 40 crewmembers and is equipped with Thomson CSF DRUA 33 radar system. SMD Ouessant has a speed of 12 knots when submerging on the surface and 20.5 knots while moving under water. The Agosta 70 class submarine also has a ECAN F17 Mod 2 torpedo that is capable of moving at a top speed of 40 knots and hitting a target at a range as far as 20km.
The Submarine Museum managed to attract quite a huge crowd. The State Government is currently looking into bringing in another submarine into the museum. The Submarine Museum will also have a recreational pool and will house the replica King Ship Melaka (Raja Kapal Melaka).

Hi Lee, the unofficial operation hour is 9.00 to 5.30 p.m.. It is definitely a good opportunity to view the submarine now because it’s free.

Is this only for external viewing or can we go inside?

It’s open to public for external viewing only. They will only consider operating it as a museum once approval is granted by the Royal Navy Marine.

Hi wj, I have not come across any website that provide information about the public transport. You can take taxi to the museum. It’s at Dataran 1Malaysia at Klebang. However for bus, unfortunately I can’t think of any at the moment. But I will try and look out for you and will drop you an email when I got the list.

Enquiry from one of our readers:
“Thanks for the heads up, I didn’t even know about the submarine museum until I got here. Is it still open for viewing of some sort, external or internal? I can take a taxi there but wonder how I will find my way out later!”
Yes. However it’s only open for external viewing. According to the Museum officials, they would need some time to plan and refurbish the interior of the submarine and make it a museum, like the current Flor de La Mar ship museum. Also, thanks for bringing up the question on transportation – the public transport is still a bit of problem there. But I’m sure the taxi driver would be willing to wait for you for 15 minutes or so and drive you to your next destination.

There was a short mention of this in today’s New Paper (Singapore). But it wasn’t clear if visitors can enter the sub.
