Bullock cart (kereta lembu) was one of the earliest form of transportation in the country when there were no motor vehicles then. People used bullock cart as a mode of travelling and transporting goods. Traditionally, bulk quantities of agricultural products like padi and straw were transported using bullock cart. The driver and passengers sat in the front section of the two-wheeled vehicle and goods were placed in the back. Bullock cart were also used for garbage collection in major towns before the Second World War.
Evidenced from a woven attap roof, it is believed that bullock carts were said to have been introduced by Indian traders during the Melaka Sultanate. The bullock cart, which at one time was the main mode of transportation for the rich in Melaka, is unlikely to be found elsewhere but in Melaka. This ancient mode of transportation is still in use today in places where modern vehicles are considered unaffordable and too expensive or when the terrain is too rugged.
The bullock cart ride area can be found in Ayer Keroh, outside the Museum of Aborigines. The location of bullock cart ride is not easy to be missed as the bullock cart has the shape of a pointed roof, similar to the horn of a bull and are beautifully decorated with bright colours and trappings.
Although the ride covers only a short distance in the surrounding areas, it is nevertheless an experience not to be missed by all.
