Even though Melaka has an international airport (MKZ) which was recently upgraded to accommodate 1.5 million passengers annually, but currently, there are only 2 commercial airlines flying into Malacca International Airport – Wings Air and Riau Airlines, from Pekanbaru.
So, in most cases, your best option for getting to Melaka, is by road transportation. In terms of public transport, Melaka has a bus terminal – Melaka Sentral, which is very comprehensive with its connecting routes.
You can practically get to Melaka, from any main town in Peninsula Malaysia (East and the West coast), as well as Singapore and the Southern part of Thailand (Hatyai), by express buses.
Getting to Melaka from KLIA/LCCT by Express Bus
For getting to Melaka from KL International Airport (KLIA) or Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) by express bus, your best option is Transnasional, if your flight’s scheduled arrival matches Transnasional’s. The journey takes about 2 and a half hours, and currently, there are 5 daily trips scheduled. You may refer to the online booking site for the latest information.
It doesn’t worth the journey getting to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur (KL) city, unless you are stopping over in the city as part of your itinerary. It takes 1 hour getting to KL from LCCT/KLIA by express bus, and another 2 hours to Melaka; also not forgetting, the transition time between the stops.
Getting to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur by Express Bus
Last time, buses from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka Sentral were using the Puduraya Bus Terminal. However, since year 2011, all South-bound buses are using the new Terminal Bersepadu Selatan at Bandar Tasik Selatan.
There are quite a number of bus operators operating the Kuala Lumpur – Melaka route. For example: Transnasional, K.K.K.L, Metrobus, Delima, Jebat Express, Mayang Sari, Nice Executive Coach, Maju Express, and etc. With so many options around, you can practically expect a bus leaving for Melaka Sentral every 30 minutes. Transnasional and K.K.K.L are the more reputable ones. Each trip takes about 2 hours of non-stop journey.
However, don’t ever under estimate the demand. This route can get very busy during weekends and public holidays, especially festive seasons. You are advised to try securing your bus tickets in advance, in order to avoid disappointment.
Getting to Melaka from Singapore by Express Bus
There are a number of bus operators offering a few daily trips between Singapore and Melaka Sentral. However, the departure point in Singapore is differing from among different operators.
- 707 Express: Queen Street Bus Terminal
- Delima Express: City Plaza, Geylang Road
- StarMart: Golden Mile Complex, Beach Road
Each trip takes about 4 hours.
Getting to Melaka From Genting Highlands by Express Bus

Hi Denis, there is a direct bus from KLIA to Malacca. The bus will leave from KLIA and it will cost you approximately MYR 22 for a one way trip. You can check the website of the Transnasional bus company on the departure schedule. I hope this helps.

On 14.11.2011 we have travelled to Malecca from KL. It was fantastic. But we ahs some bad experinece too. We stayed in Grand Season Hotel, we enquired with reception about the trip.. they advised us to go by Taxi only. When I insisted to tell about the Bus route , told us to Catch the Bus from Puduraya Bus Terminal. When we reached at 5.30 am, some body told that No bus will opeate form this terminal. On asking so many we came to know that Buses will operate from Bandar Tasik Selatan. we rushed to Bus station by local train and could catch the first Bus at 7.30 am and It took only 90 mts to reach Malecca. The journey was no nice and fantastic. On return it took 120 mts only. any how the trip was good thogh the Hotel staff was misguided us, which they would not have done when they do not have correct informaion… we observe the Drivers are good in behaviour route also excellent..

Hi Dr Motha Prasada, I guessed you would have to highlight the problem to the management of the hotel. They would be grateful for your comments and feedback. Actually, the bus station was previously located in Pudu Bus Terminal before it was relocated to Bandar Tasik Selatan as a move to streamline bus services in the Klang Valley.

is there any buses (or other transport if bus not available) from johor to melaka?
Erhern says:

Yes. There are actually a lot of buses travelling from Johor to Melaka and they are quite frequent (every half an hour). Alternatively, you can take a taxi. But it’s not advisable because normally taxi charges are expensive for outstation travel.

Hi, I took Jebat Express (bus plate number JJK 3598) 6.30pm last Sunday 8 Jan 2012 from Melaka to Singapore. Me and my pregnant wife was sitting on 2nd row. The Indian driver smoke 6-7 time during the 4 hours journey and causing uncomfortable. He told us no smoke cant concentrate, more dangerous!!
Which official can i complain to?
Erhern says:

Hi Jerradje, you can lodge your complain to Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) by sending an SMS to 39900 or calling the tol free line at 1800 88 9600. I personally think that the drivers need to be more civilized and considerate when comes to situation like this.

Hi – and first of all thanks for this useful information.
Can you please help me with this question?
I am looking at bus travel between Melaka and Kuantan. I checked on Transnational website, and they indicate “3 hours” as the time for this trip. I was very surprised, because I was expecting much longer (5-6 hours), comparing with what I have read on Internet.
Is it possible? (new subway? no stops?) Or rather a mistake on the website?
Thanks for your help !
PS extra question: what is the closer airport to Malacca: KLIA or Subang?
Erhern says:
Jan 17, 2012
Hi Nadia, I believe there is a shorter route that Transnational takes to Kuantan (pass through Segamat) which only takes approximately 3 hours. The longer journey (5-6 hours) is because some of them have to go through Kuala Lumpur and later use the Karak highway to exit Kuantan.
And KLIA is closer to Malacca.

Hi there
When we arrive at Melaka Sentral, is there a bus service to the city centre? If by taxi, how much does it cost?
Thank you,
Aud

Hi Aud, there are various bus services to the city centre. I would suggest you to take on the Panorama bus (it’s a red bus) as it stops at most of the interesting places in the city. If you decide to travel by taxi, it should range from RM5 to RM10 for a short journey – Melaka Sentral is located quite near to the city centre. However, if you travel during peak hours or when the city is flooded with cars (usually on weekends and public holidays), then the taxi fare might doubled.
